Pre and Post Surgery
Dr Tran also places great emphasis on communications pre and post surgery.
- Pre surgery: Dr Tran will ensure that the patients are informed of the surgical process, risks/potential complications and expectations during and post surgery.
- Post surgery: Dr Tran will discuss the outcome of the operation including recovery process and provide written information about post operative care.
Cataracts
Cataracts are a normal part of the body's ageing process where the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy over a long period of time. Patients with cataracts will often notice that the cataract procedure can produce satisfying results as vision is dramatically improved, usually straight after surgery.
The cataract procedure replaces the patient's natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The surgery is usually uncomplicated and has one of the highest rates of success of any type of surgery.
Prior to surgery, Dr Tran will take detailed measurements of the eye to determine the optimum strength of lens to insert. These measurements are highly accurate and Dr Tran can discuss the various options available for correcting the patients' vision.

Trabeculectomy
Trabeculectomy, otherwise known as filtration surgery, is performed to lower the pressure in the eye. This is achieved by creating a new drainage site which allows fluid to flow away from the eye. This procedure is used to treat open-angle glaucoma and chronic closed-angle glaucoma
Lowering the pressure in the eye will help slow down loss of vision, however it will not fix any loss of vision prior to surgery. The surgery is usually performed near the top of the eye, behind the upper eyelid, with excellent cosmetic results.
This procedure is generally recommended for patients with glaucoma that continues to progress despite the use of treatments such as laser and/or medication. In some cases it is performed if patients are intolerant to eye drops.
Dr Tran will be able to assess and advise on the effectiveness of current treatments and whether a trabeculetomy procedure is recommended.

Pterygium
A pterygium is a fleshy overgrowth of tissue from the white of the eye over onto the coloured part of the eye and is most common in people between the age of 20 to 30 years old. The cause of pterygium has been strongly linked to the amount of sun a person is exposed to, especially in the first 10 years of their life.
While Australians enjoy an abundance of sun and outdoor activity, unfortunately some do not adequately protect themselves from harmful ultraviolet radiation. As such, pterygium are becoming increasingly common, especially in our sunny states. While surgery is one form of treatment, wearing a broad brim hat and close-fitting sunglasses that are compliant with Australian Standards can go a long way to slowing the rate of progression, or even prevention.
Dr Tran trained in Queensland, (where there is an extremely highly prevalence of pterygium) learning the latest surgical techniques. Dr Tran uses a microsurgical technique which provides excellent cosmetic results for the patient and a minimal recurrence rate.

Glaucoma Drainage Devices
Glaucoma drainage devices (shunts) are designed to divert fluid from the front of the eye to an external reservoir, with flow regulated by a fibrous capsule. These devices are used to control intraocular pressure (IOP) in eyes and is used to treat complicated glaucomas such as uveitic glaucoma, aphakic glaucoma, neovascular glaucoma, and peadiatric/developmental glaucomas.
This procedure is generally recommended for patients who have had a failed trabeculectomy or those with scarring from previous surgical procedures or injuries. Glaucoma drainage devices come in different sizes, materials and design. Dr Tran will explain and recommend the best device to produce the optimal outcome based on the patient's circumstances.
Having trained extensively in this sub-specialty field, Dr Tran is highly skilled and experienced in the latest laser and glaucoma surgical techniques to ensure the best possible outcome.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)
For patients with glaucoma, reducing intra-ocular pressure becomes increasingly important with three main treatments available: drops, laser or surgery. Each of these treatments have their own merits, depending on personal circumstances. However, until recently surgical options were complex and invasive.
MIGS offers a less invasive surgical option for reducing pressure within the eye. It can be performed with or without cataract surgery to lower the intraocular pressure. As an increasingly popular alternative, MIGS is seen as a major advancement in glaucoma management and include such devices as iStent, Hydrus, CyPass and XEN Gel implant.
Dr Tran has extensive experience in MIGS and will assess which is the right option for you.

Ocular Trauma Repair
Injuries to the eye and surrounding structures are inherently complicated and depending on the type of trauma, present boundless risks and issues for repair. This requires detailed understanding of the surrounding systems including muscles, head, neck and brain and other vital organs.
Dr Tran has extensive experience with the surrounding structures related to the eye. Dr Tran also works closely with other sub-specialties such as neurosurgeons and ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) surgeons to ensure the best possible overall outcome for the patient.
